| Part of my weekly shopping |
Berries
Tomatoes
Pineapple
Oranges
Leaks
Pears
Apples
Salmon
Aubergine (Egg Plant)
Eggs
Broccoli
Bananas
This is quite typical of what I have. I also purchase on a weekly basis: walnuts, almonds, brazil nuts, wild game, chicken, sardines, olives, nut milk and almond butter (and most weeks a bit of 85% dark chocolate).
You will sneakily see my Juice Plus on the right hand side. That's because even though I buy a lot of fruit and veg, I'm aware that some days I don't eat the required amount. Also the stresses our bodies face now require a greater amount of antioxidants and phytonutrients than the recommended 5 a day. On top of that this looks like a lot of food but 5 a day means by the end of the week, I'm running out.
Eating well is easy as long as you prepare for it. Take the time to plan and remember that variety is key. If you stick to the same fruit, veg and protein then boredom sets in and it's easy to be tempted by quick fixes.
Hope this helps give ideas of some things to include in your weekly shop.

We don't eat a lot of meat, but on occassion I will buy organic beef or chicken. We do often have shrimp on hand, though.
ReplyDeleteBetween the two of us (plus baby), we stick to a $100 a week grocery budget. It doesn't seem like a lot but if you spend most of your money on fresh produce and cook from scratch, $100 can go a long way. It's the processed and pre-packaged foods that really add up.
Staples in our household:
- Onions
- Sweet potato
- Cucumber
- Carrots
- Green, red, yellow bell peppers
- Mushrooms
- Lemons and limes
- Garlic and ginger
- Goat cheese (mozza and feta)
- Goat milk (we make goat yogurt)
- Cilantro
- A variety of fruits - whatever is in season
- Lots of avocados
- Sparkling water (add lime, lemon and stevia)
- Tofu on occassion
- Organic sprouted grain and flax bread
- Butter
- Chickpeas and lentils
- Organic tortilla chips as our weekly treat
- Shrimp
I admit I treat myself to decaf lattes on occassion. I don't think they're too bad if you don't sweeten them.
Nice list! Thanks for sharing. It's great to buy organic meat. I often say it's best to eat less of it and pay a bit more for better quality. You make your own yogurt? Very cool.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I'd rather pay more for a smaller amount of something with the best quality ingredients.
ReplyDeleteYes, we make a big pot of goat yogurt every second week or so and use it in cooking (lots of indian-type dishes) and for breakfasts, snacks, smoothies etc. My man is sensitive to anything that comes from a cow (meat and dairy) so goat is a great alternative. Unfortunately, he's allergic to nuts as well otherwise I'd put nuts in everything!
